Video-based Collaboration

Spin is built from the ground up for mobile-based, multi-participant videoconferencing. With Spin, up to 10 people can participate in a video session from their mobile devices. By leveraging a cloud-based architecture rather than peer-to-peer (P2P), Spin solves common denominator issues for multi-participant video chats, providing the highest QoS possible.

Video-based collaboration is where Spin truly distinguishes itself from the competition. Spin’s proprietary network protocol differentiates different data streams and sends them through multiple channels — for example, sending animations and drawings through one channel, and audio and video through another. The result is a high quality of experience (QoE) in both the fidelity of the communications and the support of simultaneous collaboration activities, such as watching videos, viewing photos, and annotating documents.

NPL Beam

Cloud-based Application Streaming

Beam leverages NPL’s proprietary low-latency network protocol to stream applications from the cloud to client devices. With Beam, enterprise customers can deploy virtualized apps that run from the cloud to dramatically simplify desktop software and mobile application deployments for BYOD employees, remote workers, or contractors and partners. Beam can also be deployed within Spin or white-labeled, so that users can collaborate on various applications during a videoconference. And even processing-heavy applications, like 3D games and software, can be used on client devices regardless of their hardware profiles.

Scalable backend architecture

Designed for flexibility, the LUX™ Network Operating Environment is a scalable data center system capable of supporting millions of concurrent users. By implementing a cloud-based solution, NPL solves common denominator issues found in P2P network computing. So regardless of the device or network constraints of one participant in a videoconference, other participants aren’t negatively impacted. Another key advantage to Spin’s cloud-based architecture is that participants share a similar experience, even if they don’t have the same applications or client devices.

Layered Architecture

Multiple distributed network streams are independently delivered in separate layers then composed and synchronized as one single-layered experience. Because Spin renders the base layer stream (media, documents, applications) independently from collaboration layers (drawing, comments, gestures, virtual experiences), the original media is delivered without altering its content, thus protecting the originator’s intellectual property and ensuring compliance with DRM (Digital Rights Management) guidelines.

Low-Latency Network Protocol

A patented and proprietary network protocol developed by NPL provides low-latency delivery for the Spin and Beam products. Using multiple parallel channels, the network protocol intelligently sets priorities for delivering different data streams. While graphical information like animations and drawings are sent through reliable queues, video and audio are sent through unreliable queues to speed delivery of packets. In addition, aggressive congestion control algorithms in the network protocol respond to capacity issues far more rapidly than TCP, allowing for faster recovery to full data transmission.

Pervasive Computing

NPL has filed and been granted several patents in the area of pervasive computing. There are two core applications for this technology — transferring computing from one device to the other and using multiple devices to deliver an integrated experience. In the first application, one client device, part of a cloud computing environment, transfers execution of a process over to a second client device based on verification and in proximity to the first device. The second application allows multiple devices to participate together, providing different computational roles.
